This book is a wonderful reference source for anyone wishing to research certain Napoleonic generals from the 1st Empire. ALL of Napoleon's Generals (ranked General of DIVISION or higher) who were present for the WATERLOO CAMPAIGN of 1815 are listed within....Each general is listed alphabetically; starting with Bachelu and ending with Watier. In most cases, several pages are written about each general. More famous personalities such as Marshal Ney have far more content/pages (24 pages just for Ney) while lesser known generals such as General Ruty have fewer pages (2 pages for Ruty)..........Each general's biography is organized by many different categories and career highlights: starting with "Early Career", then listing the DETAILED highlights of all of the campaigns they fought in, followed by "The Waterloo Campaign" (and their detailed involvement) with a "Final Career Assessment". To provide an example as to how the information is organized by category, the biography of General Maurice Gerard (1773-1852) will be used: The first category is "Background & Early Career"; then, "Career under Bernadotte"; "Prussia and Poland 1806-1807"; "The Danube Campaign 1809"; "Spain 1810-1811"; "The Russian Campaign of 1812"; "Poland and Saxony 1813"; "The 1814 Campaign in France"; "The Restoration and Napoleon's Return"; "The Waterloo Campaign - Bourmont's Defection"; "Later Political and Military Career" and finally, "A Career Assessment".......The well known military artist Keith Rocco has provided portrait sketches of most of the generals and these sketches are located throughout the book next to the beginning of each general's biography. Other black and white artwork/prints of battle scenes is also included throughout this work.......The author has further included detailed orders of battle for the French forces listing the numerical strength of officers/men for each Division and individual regiment starting on 12 June 1815 and then again shows the strength on 25 June 1815. The campaign service records of each general is also listed in the back.........For the Wargamer, a "Wargames Chart" is also provided in the back with numerical rankings being provided for each general/commander.
The information and detail provided for each general is SUPERB and there is much that can be learned about the life of each of these personalities.......As previously mentioned, only those individuals with the rank of General of DIVISION or HIGHER and who were with Napoleon AT THE WATERLOO CAMPAIGN are listed.
This book is an absolute TREASURE for those Napoleonic enthusiasts who are seeking detailed information about the life and career of a certain general who fought with Napoleon in 1815. |
